LOS ANGELES -- A man suspected of trying to rob a Wells Fargo bank branch today in downtown Van Nuys was apparently shot with his own gun during a struggle with a security guard and bank patrons.
The attempted bank robbery and shooting was reported at 12:27 p.m. at the bank branch at 6800 Van Nuys Boulevard, within two blocks of the Van Nuys Police Station, said Brian Humphries of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The suspect entered the bank wearing a disguise of some sort, possibly a mask or a fake mustache and beard, and carrying a semi-automatic weapon, ABC7 reported.
A bank security guard apparently confronted and struggled with the suspect, said Kate Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department.
"It was a good knockdown fight between the security guard and the suspect," Capt. Jim Miller of the LAPD told the TV station. "On its face it appears that the suspect may have been beginning to gain the upper hand when the customers joined in to assist."
Witnesses said bank customers jumped in to subdue the suspect.
"He grabbed him and took him down and the older lady and those three guys just ran on top of him and choked him and pulled on him," bank customer Juan Gonzalez said.
The suspect was hit by one bullet and the security guard may have been grazed.
It was unclear if the gun went off during the struggle, if the suspect fired or was shot by someone else.
The guard suffered minor injuries, Lopez said. The suspect was hospitalized in unknown condition.
